Linen is the aristocrat of bedding fabrics — and for good reason. Made from the fibres of the flax plant, linen has been used for bedding for thousands of years across Europe, Egypt, and parts of India. It is stronger than cotton, more absorbent, more breathable, and it has one quality that no other fabric can match: it gets better with age. A linen bedsheet at five years old is softer, more comfortable, and more beautiful than it was on the day you bought it.
Why Linen Costs More
Linen is more expensive than cotton because the flax plant is harder to grow, slower to harvest, and more complex to process into fibre. The weaving process is also more exacting — linen yarn has less elasticity than cotton, so the looms must run slower. The result is a fabric that takes more time and more skill to produce — but one that lasts 2-3 times longer than cotton and improves with use.
The Linen Experience
Out of the packaging, linen feels crisp and slightly stiff. Some people love this immediately; others need a few washes to appreciate it. By the fifth wash, the fabric begins to soften noticeably. By the twentieth wash, it is supple, fluid, and has a lived-in character that cannot be replicated by any other fabric. The natural slubs and texture variations in the weave — often seen as imperfections in other fabrics — are the hallmark of genuine linen and part of its visual appeal.
Linen is extremely breathable — it keeps you cool in 42°C Ahmedabad heat and warm enough in 15°C December nights. It absorbs up to 20% of its weight in moisture before feeling damp, and it dries faster than cotton. If you invest in one premium bedding set, make it linen.

Care
Machine wash warm or cold. Linen is very durable — it can handle regular machine washing indefinitely. In fact, each wash improves the fabric. Do not bleach (it weakens the fibres). Tumble dry on low or line-dry. Linen wrinkles naturally — this is not a defect, it is the fabric’s character. Iron on high heat with steam if you prefer a smoother finish. Expect the sheet to last 7-10 years with regular use.
