Our Mulmul Cotton Summer Dohar is the product our customers love most — and the one they come back for, season after season. Made from two layers of pure cotton muslin (mulmul), hand-stitched with fine running stitch, this dohar weighs just 650 grams in double size. It is, quite literally, the lightest covering you can sleep under while still feeling covered.
Why Mulmul?
Mulmul has been woven in India for over 500 years. The word comes from the Bengali “mal-mal,” meaning ultra-fine cotton. Traditional weavers could produce mulmul so fine that an entire bolt could pass through a ring. Our mulmul is woven at a modern scale but retains the essential character of the original — open weave, extraordinary breathability, and a softness that deepens with every wash.
Construction & Details
Two layers of 60-count cotton muslin, hand-stitched together with a fine running stitch in a traditional kantha-inspired pattern. The edges are finished with a contrast binding that adds a subtle design detail while reinforcing the most stress-prone areas of the dohar. All prints are reactive-dyed — they bond with the fibre and will not wash out or fade prematurely. Size: 90×100 inches (double/king). Weight: approximately 650 grams.
The Sleep Experience
In the first use, the mulmul feels crisp and light. By the third or fourth wash, the cotton fibres bloom and soften dramatically. By the tenth wash, the dohar has the drape and feel of something that has been in your family for years. This progressive softening is the signature quality of good mulmul — and the reason our customers describe their oldest mulmul dohar as their favourite.
Best For
Summer nights above 28°C without AC. Air-conditioned bedrooms set to 24-26°C (as a light layer). Children and babies — the fabric is AZO-free and breathable enough to prevent overheating. Anyone who finds blankets and quilts too heavy for most of the year.
Care
Machine wash cold, gentle cycle. Mild liquid detergent. No bleach, no fabric softener on first wash. Line-dry in shade. Iron on low if desired, but the natural crinkle is part of the charm. Expect 3-5% shrinkage after first wash. See our care guide for detailed instructions.
